It can be tough working from home, especially when working on creative projects – there’s never quite enough space to spread out; leave everything out; not get in everybody’s way; not have everybody get in the way...

Environmentally sensitive - Our customers want to work in a natural environment. We use building materials and woods that do not need to be treated with preservatives and we avoid plastics. The result is a beautiful, maintanence-free studio.

Built to last - InsideOut buildings are built in the same way as a timber-frame house, then finished with larch on the outside.

Insulation, insulation, insulation - this is our open secret! Lots and lots of eco-friendly insulation so that minimal heat is needed. no air-conditioning is needed. the atmosphere is always stable and paper doesn't absorb moisture.

Storage - Strong walls that you can attach shelves to. Or hang things from the high ceiling. (We hang a 12ft boat from our studio ceiling.)

Strong floors - to easily support cupboards and equipment.

Hand-made, double-glazed windows and doors - finished in the colour of your choice

Planning permission

You may or may not need planning permission. The basic rules for garden outbuildings are explained on our planning permission page. The simplest way to find out if you need planning permission is to ring Lynn Fotheringham, our planning permission expert on 01524 737999.

If you're a professional or serious hobby artist keeping your equipment and papers under the stairs and getting them out every time you want to do some work isn't a practical solution. As architects and designers, we know this through personal experience.
